Updates from a Snow Covered English Acres

January sure is a quiet time here on the farm. No vegetables to tend, no broiler chickens to feed, just the laying flock to take care of and eggs to collect. I have had a little time to teach myself some new skills in the kitchen, such as fermenting my own vegetables for a natural probiotic boost, and I have been able to find some extra time to sit by the wood stove and look through seed and poultry catalogs, planning and preparing for another busy season.

Through the winter we continue to have eggs available. You may notice the yolks are a less intense yellow-orange. Rest assured our hens are still out and about hunting, pecking, and eating bugs, and still receiving an organic non-GMO feed- they just find a lot less green to eat! The green matter is what gives the yolks such a startling color. I’m sure the hens are looking forward to the lush clover of spring!

I am currently accepting freezer meal clients, so if you are interested be sure to check out my menu and feel free to contact me with questions. I love helping others to serve their family nutritious meals, whether its 3 meals a month, 20, or anything in between!

I am consistently at Innate Chiropractic in Perrysburg Tuesday and on a delivery route in BG Wednesday, so let me know what I can bring you. If you are along my current delivery route, I am happy to drop off your order or I can meet you at my central pick-up point.

Last call for chicken in 2015

Chicken! We are nearly sold out for our October 3rd pick-up date (final pick-up date for the 2015 season), so if you want to order chicken please contact me ASAP.

Eggs will continue to be available year round. We are busy making plans to keep our hens safe and warm through the winter. At this point they are enjoying the fall weather, the extra herbs I am harvesting for them, and are laying more every day, so tell your friends ūüėČ

We also have a limited quantity or organic apples. They are an heirloom variety similar to a McIntosh, tart-sweet and crisp. They are great for sauce, pies and eating (ask my kids!!) $2/lbs.

As always, our clean convenience meals are available to help you feed your family well on the busiest of days. Give yourself a break from cooking, give them as gifts to friends that have had babies, or treat someone elderly to a delicious and nutritious meal. Chicken, Eggs and Apples

Thank you to everyone for making our first chicken processing day a success! It was a little hectic, and we definitely learned how to make things go more smoothly at pick-up next time, but in the end everyone ended up with delicious chicken and we are so excited to have shared this experience with you all!

Our garden has really slowed down this last week, and we are using most everything in our clean convenience meals. So thank you for your produce bag purchases this season and stay tuned for details on our produce options for next season.

Our hens are doing well, and we have eggs available for $5/dozen. They are pastured and supplemented with organic non-gmo feed. Amazing taste and nutrition that you can’t get in the grocery store!

This week I also have a limited supply of organic apples for $2/lbs. They are a heritage variety with a crisp texture and sweet-tart flavor. They make great sauce, pies and apple crisp (just ask my kids!) and are also delicious to just eat!


Produce, Eggs and Chicks, Oh My!

I can’t believe it, but the feeling of an impending fall season has arrived! I love how every season not only feels, but sounds different. In the spring, I am so excited to here the spring peepers. Summer nights are rich with the sounds of crickets and tree frogs, and the last week or so, the cicadas bring the sound of summer’s end. I love living in a place with so many seasons that we can see, feel and hear. There is always something new and fresh to experience.

With the impending change of season, we had our last delivery of broiler chicks for the season. Northwest Ohio winters are much too harsh to raise chickens outdoors, so this will be our last batch until spring. These guys should be ready in early October; stock up your freezers for winter!.

I am VERY excited to announce that the hens are upping their laying QUICKLY and I have eggs to sell! RIght now they are $4/dozen, since some of them are still a little small. Each dozen has a beautiful mix of shapes, sizes and colors from our very diverse flock. It is lots of fun to see what you get in each carton!

We also have some delicious produce available this week at $25 for each share bag:
1 pound Green Beans
1 pint Cherry/grape/pear tomatoes
1 box slicing tomatoes
1 bunch sweet onions
1 green pepper OR summer squash
1 bunch carrots
1 bunch herbs (let me know if you would like extra for drying, I have lots and would be happy to share the bounty!)

Pick up available at 4:45 at Innate Chiropractic in Perrysburg, Wed. 2-4 in BG or anytime at the farm. Or, as usual, if you know our paths will cross let me know and we can arrange something!

Week of August 2nd

It is hot and dry out there and the wet cool days of early summer seem long gone!  The vegetable fields seem to have gone straight from flooded to dry and dusty.  So much for balance!
The broiler chickens are growing every day and our processing dates are quickly approaching. ¬†If you haven’t reserved your birds yet, now is the time! ¬†$4/lb for delicious, nutritious pasture-raised chicken. ¬†Let me know if you have any questions.
We also have exciting news from the hen house. ¬†We have eggs! ¬†They aren’t coming in fast enough to sell yet, but it won’t be long now. ¬†They are absolutely delicious with dark gold-yellow yolks and firm whites. ¬†What a treat we had for breakfast today! ¬†Stay tuned for availability.

  1. Wash and de-stem 1 lbs. green beans.
  2. Steam for 2 minutes and immediately run under cold water. Place in large bowl.
  3. Add one finely sliced sweet onion.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 TBSP olive oil, 1 TBSP white wine vinegar, 1 tsp dijon mustard, and 2 cloves crushed garlic, salt and pepper. Pour over green beans.
  5. Snip 2 TBSP fresh dill and toss over green beans.

Eat cold or room temperature--enjoy!

  1. Cut stem and blossom ends from squash, and then cut into slices lengthwise (not coins)
  2. Place on cookie sheet and brush with olive oil.
  3. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and thyme.
  4. Broil until soft and starting to brown (can also do this on the grill!)

Produce Share Bags @ $25 each:

Starting this week we have an additional pick up location in Perrysburg:
1. Monday at Innate Chiropractic, 26580 N. Dixie Hwy, Perrysburg 5:00-5:15pm
2. Tuesday at the Common Good, Crim St., BG 2:45-3:00 pm
3. At the farm, Tuesday 5-8pm or Wednesday 5-8 pm, or by appointment

Notes from a Less Wet Farm

I am almost afraid to say it (lest some pop up suddenly!), but we made it through today without any of the predicted thunderstorms!  It was hot and sunny most of the weekend, and the vegetables are responding to this more summer-like weather.
The broiler chickens are thriving in the brooder and will be outside on pasture by next week.  I will start making contacts later this week to take orders for chicken (August 29th approximate processing and pick-up date) but feel free to contact me first to reserve your birds.
The laying hens are around the garden and orchard eating Japanese Beetles (hooray!) and growing every day, hopefully to be laying delicious, wholesome eggs in a couple of months.
Life at English Acres is looking pretty good this weekend!
Share bags are $25 this week and will be ready for pick-up/delivery Wed.
You have several options to collect them:
1. I will be at the Common Good, 113 Crim Street, BG from 10:15-10:30 Wed.
2. You can come to the farm Wed. 4-8pm or by appointment
3. I can deliver with your meal order, catch up with you at a play date, etc. Let me know if you anticipate that our paths will cross and I can bring your veggies with me!
This week our share bags will include the following:
2 cucumbers
zucchini and yellow squash….quite a bit of it!
1 kohlrabi
1 pint tomatoes (mixed varieties, I have grape, cherry, yellow pear, roma, and 4th of July.  All are producing, but none are in great shape due to the wet, so every bag will likely be a bit different)
1 bunch Sweet onions (sweet like vadalia, but golf ball size.  Green tops can be used, too)
Mixed bunch of herbs

What do I do with…..
Kohlrabi and herbs
-Peel and slice for a deliicously crunchy raw vegetable.
-Kohlrabi Slaw-peel and grate or finely chop kohlrabi.  Whisk together 1 TBSP olive oil, 1 TBSP fresh lemon juice, 1 clove minced fresh garlic, 2 TBSP chopped fresh dill.  Pour over kohlrabi and stir to coat.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Cucumbers, Sweet Onions and Herbs
Cucumber Salad-thinly slice cucumbers and sweet onions.  Mix with several TBSP sour cream.  Chop  3 TBSP each dill and chives, mix into cucumber mixture.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Sweet Onions and Herbs
Slice zucchini, yellow squash, and sweet onions.  Mix with enough olive oil to coat.  Either saute in skillet OR place on large piece of foil, fold into a pouch, and cook on grill until desired tenderness.  Just before serving sprinkle with fresh thyme (run fingers from tip down on stems to easily remove leaves from woody stem) salt and pepper.

Notes From a Very Wet Farm

Yesterday I was out checking the vegetables and thought, ‚ÄúWe might just be ok with a couple more of these warm sunny days.‚Ä̬† And then I woke up early this morning, before the sun was even up, and heard the all too familiar pitter-patter of raindrops outside my window.¬† Two inches of rain later, and things are looking pretty soggy.¬† The plants are yellowing and just crying out for some July heat!
Farmers in Northwest Ohio are having a tough (and wet!!) year.   There is a lot of crop loss with fields full of standing water, plants rotting, etc.  It is hard on the animals (and the farmers who take care of them).   So we thank you for sticking with us and supporting your local food source through the good times and bad!

This week I have share bags at $20 each. ¬†Remember, all of our crops are produced using our ‚Äúbeyond organic‚ÄĚ methods of natural fertilizers, no pesticides and earth friendly practices. ¬†Please email me if you would like a bag‚Äďfirst come, first served.

All share bags must be picked up Wednesday, July 14th!  You have several options:
1.   You may come to the farm between 2pm and 5pm, or by appointment
2.   I will be in the parking lot of Sundae Station in BG from 6:15-6:30.
3.   I will deliver with your freezer meal order if you have one scheduled
4.  I see many of you in the week at playgroups, story time, appointments, etc. so if you know our paths will cross let me know and I can likely bring it with me!

*What do I do with……
Kohlrabi-peel it and eat it raw‚ÄĒcrunchy and mild!¬† Peel, cube and boil it-add a little butter and salt.¬† Shred it and toss with olive oil, white wine vinegar, garlic and salt for a delicious slaw‚ÄĒmy favorite!
Herbs: Dill and chives go great with cucumbers.   Slice your cucumbers, toss them with a few tablespoons of sour cream, and snip in the chives and dill-delish!  Thyme and chives are fantastic with sautéed zucchini, just snip them in at the very end of cooking.  Mint is delicious crushed  in lemonade or iced tea (just smash it up a bit to release the flavors, but leave the leaves intact on the stem).  You’ll look very fancy, too!

Hello everyone! ¬†We are drying out and the vegetable fields are producing! ¬†It hasn’t been an easy year to be increasing our production so drastically, but we are learning a lot (including to be patient with mother nature!)
This week I have share bags at $20 each. ¬†Remember, all of our crops are produced using our ‚Äúbeyond organic‚ÄĚ methods of natural fertilizers, no pesticides and earth friendly practices. ¬†Please email me if you would like a bag–first come, first served.
Each bag contains the following:
Large bag of green leaf lettuce
2 Cucumbers-the pickling variety, great for slicing into salads or eating on their own, they are crisp and flavorful.
1 bunch beets (greens intact so you can eat these too!)
2-3 zucchini or yellow squash
Assorted fresh herbs such as chives, oregano, mint, and dill
All share bags must be picked up Wednesday, July 8th!  You have several options:
1.   You may come to the farm between 2pm and 5pm, or by appointment
2.   I will be in the parking lot of Dayspring church from 12pm-12:25pm.
3.   I will deliver with your freezer meal order if you have one scheduled
4.  I see many of you in the week at playgroups, storytime, appointments, etc. so if you know our paths will cross let me know and I can likely bring it with me!
